Sales Tax is known as Goods and Services Tax (GST), as well it is called Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) to certain provinces. The current HST rate for Newfoundland and Labradors is 13%. The GST/HST rate is difference from one province to another. Most items you buy in Canada have 2 types of taxes that are Federal Government Sales Tax - GST Provincial Government Sales Tax - PST.
For instance, if you are buying a new TV: New TV $300 + HST 13% ($39) = Total of $339.

You are required to file a tax return every year and this can be done online or by mail. For those who are filing a tax return for the first time, they must mail their tax return to the International Tax Office in Ottawa. For students, the online tax filing system is provided free of charge by Ufile.ca (promotional code FAY1493).
ISA organizes income tax session for students to assist them in filing their tax return. The tax session is scheduled in March and April every year. If you have any question about filing a tax return, you may ask the ISA staff or you can call the tax center in St. John's.
